Supervision of Students

Supervision of students is an important issue. The school has a duty of care, which is a legal responsibility for our students, in particular those under 16 years old. The following levels of supervision are provided.

At The Residence

Staff are always on duty in the evening and in the residence at night. In addition there is 24 hour security. During the evening and night time students are strictly prohibited from leaving the residence unsupervised.

In The Courtyard

During the evening students are only allowed in the courtyard in front of the residence when members of staff are also present. This is clearly written on the activities program displayed in the residence.

In Town

No student will be allowed to go into town unless in supervised groups.

Excursions

Staff to student ratios are strictly enforced and students are double checked on and off buses. During excursions, free time is often given for the students to explore a designated area, e.g. a shopping area. Students can do this in small groups unsupervised but they are told the time and place to meet and also where staff will be during their free time.

Classes

Any absence from class is immediately reported to the Centre Manager or Director of Studies and investigated.

Other Necessary Information

Meals

All meals are provided in large, comfortable cafeterias on campus, except on excursions when a packed-lunch is given to all students. Wholesome and varied food is served and special dietary requirements can be catered for. Please advise us at the time of enrolment if a student has any special dietary requirements.

Laundry

Laundry facilities are available at the residence halls where students are accommodated. Bed linen and towels are changed once a week, but no other laundry is included in the course fees. If students wish to wash clothes during their stay, they will be responsible for doing so. The cost is $2.25 per wash and $1.25 per tumble dry.

Emergencies

A 24-hour emergency telephone number will be given in writing to students. All students will be issued with an identity card, which explains what action is to be followed in the event of an emergency or other difficulty. Students will be told to carry this card at all times.

All students must provide an emergency contact number to the staff on their first day. This should normally be the number of a parent/ guardian.

Breakages Deposit

A breakages deposit of 100 USD per student will be collected from all students on the first day of their course. This is to cover loss of keys and/or any damage caused to the facilities. Please note that the cost of master replacement keys is normally 70 USD. This deposit will be returned at the end of the course, minus any charged incurred. On departure all rooms will be inspected.

What to Bring

The weather in the San Francisco Bay Area during July and August is usually warm and settled. Temperatures typically range from 19-21 degrees centigrade / 67-71 degrees Fahrenheit. There should be very little rain and lots of sunshine but there may be a little early morning rain so bringing an umbrella is advised. Students should bring summer clothes as well as a pullover, waterproof jacket, swimwear, trainers (sports shoes) for outside usage, white-soled sports shoes for use in the sports hall, and a towel.

Students should also bring 2 x passport-sized photographs, an alarm clock and hairdryer (+ adapter) if needed. Students should remember to bring an adaptor for their mobile phone charger.

We advise that students do not bring valuable items such as expensive watches, jewellery, electronic items, cameras etc. However, valuables and items such as passports and airline tickets can be given to our staff for safekeeping. We cannot accept responsibility for the loss of items or money unless given to us for safekeeping.

Rules for Students

Students must follow the law of the land, which mean that:

  1. No students can buy alcohol (it is illegal to buy alcohol in the US if you are under the age of 21)
  2. No students can buy cigarettes / tobacco (it is illegal to buy cigarettes / tobacco in the US if you are under the age of 18)

The use of alcohol and drugs is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students found to be in possession of alcohol or drugs may be reported to the police and their course terminated with no refund given. The school does not accept any liability for students who are under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal substances. No smoking is permitted while on the course. This applies to all students. Group leaders may only smoke in designated areas, outside the campus buildings.

Students are expected to keep their bedrooms tidy and put their litter in bins provided. Students are not permitted to leave the campus unsupervised without permission.

Students must leave the communal areas in the residence at 10:30 pm and be in their own rooms by 11pm when "quiet time" will start. "Lights out" at 11:30 pm.

We reserve the right to terminate without notice the course of any student who persistently misconducts him/herself during the programme, or who fails to meet the attendance requirements of the course. There is no refund of fees to students whose courses are terminated in this way. If a student is a part of a group, the group leader must be involved in any disciplinary procedures that are enforced.
