Intensive General English Courses in New York City

We offer Intensive General English courses at both campuses. General English language courses at our English Language school in New York focus on learning through communication and practicing real-life English both in and out of the classroom. We believe in an integrated approach to language learning, incorporating speaking, writing, reading, listening, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary into every lesson with particular emphasis on practicing language in depth through conversation and writing.

General English courses at Fifth Avenue Campus are offered with 20 lessons a week with morning and afternoon classes. You can choose a General English course in the morning (09.00-13.00) or in the afternoon (13.45-17.40). One lesson = 50 minutes. Maximum 12 students in the group.

At the Fifth Avenue Campus, we also offer a special English for Beginners course (20 lessons per week, am). Course duration: 4 weeks. This course is for students who have not studied English before, or those who want to start again from the very beginning. The course may also form part of a longer program, with students transferring to elementary level at the end of 4 weeks.

You can also combine General English with English for Business at Fifth Avenue Campus. Course duration: 4 weeks. This course includes 15 lessons per week of General English plus 5 lessons per week of English for Business. (Intermediate level or above is required.)

General English One-to-one Courses at Fifth Avenue Campus. Intensive General English courses are designed for students who wish to accelerate their progress during their stay. We offer progressive discounts from week to week, and special discounts for afternoon lessons. One-to-one courses are especially suitable for zero beginners who wish to start on non-beginner start dates.

Intensive General English Full-Time Courses with 24 lessons a week are offered for F-1 students at the St. James Building Campus. These full-time English classes are communicative based with an emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills. Our Intensive English class at St. James campus is designed to help ESL students improve both spoken and written English. With six levels of study, this course features a comprehensive curriculum of integrated skills - grammar, vocabulary & idioms, speaking & listening, and reading & writing.

You can study English with our professional, experienced and attentive instructors, who guide students towards fluency with creative and helpful learning activities. With 14 or less students in the classes, students have plenty of opportunity both to practice their English and meet interesting new friends from around the world.

English Language School in New YorkThe Intensive English class at St. James campus features a comprehensive curriculum with a focus on oral communication - speaking and listening. Well trained and highly qualified instructors help students improve their conversation skills through a variety of creative activities. There are six different levels of study, from beginner through advanced. A placement test helps us find the best class level for each student. At the end of each four-week session, each student will receive a written evaluation and have a one-on-one with one of their teachers. This is how we help you monitor your progress. After each three month semester, students receive a report card, and students receive a certificate when they finish their course.

Intensive English Class at St. James campus: Schedule Example

9:30 - 11:30* In the Integrated Skills Class, students study four English skills - reading, writing, speaking, and listening - in a conversational way, through a system called Communicative Language Teaching. New grammar patterns are learned in the context of a conversation or an article. Students use various activities to practice English conversation including listening tasks, role plays, and discussion. Practical reading and writing tasks and vocabulary studies are presented as well.
11:30* - 12:30 Lunch
12:30* - 2:30 During the Active Listening class, students cover a variety of topics while practicing English conversation management, American conversational styles, and pronunciation. Students learn commonly used American idioms and slang in a communicative way. Students use various activities to practice these new idioms including listening tasks, role plays, and discussion.
*Note: Actual class starting time may be one hour before or after the above sample, depending on the level.
